For many sighted people, checking the label on a packet, reading the controls on an appliance, understanding a photograph or scanning a crowded shopping page takes only a few seconds.

For a person who is blind or has low vision, the same task may require accessible labelling, a screen reader, a specialised application or assistance from another person.

Artificial intelligence is beginning to change that relationship—not by giving people sight, and not by making human help unnecessary, but by translating parts of the visual world into conversational information that a person can question and use.

One of the clearest examples is Be My AI, the AI-powered visual assistant within the Be My Eyes platform. A user can take a photograph, receive a detailed description and ask follow-up questions about what the image contains. If the AI cannot answer, if the result needs verification or if the user simply prefers human support, the person can still contact a volunteer through the same service.

This is an important example of what responsible AI can make possible: not replacing human capability, but extending human independence.

A Documented Example: 19 People Reframing Everyday Assistance

A research preprint published on 14 September 2026 interviewed 19 blind and low-vision people about their use of generative AI. The participants described using AI as a communication intermediary: a tool that could translate visual or otherwise inaccessible material into information they could act upon.

The researchers found that some routine requests which had previously gone to family members, friends or other people could instead be directed to AI. Participants reported greater independence and less everyday effort, while also describing concerns about inaccurate answers, disclosure and privacy. Seven participants said they used generative AI several times a day, and all 19 used assistive technologies such as Be My AI or Seeing AI.

This is a real, attributable small-group example—not a claim that every person with visual impairment has the same experience. The study is a preprint, its sample is small, and its interview findings do not prove population-wide effects. Even so, it captures a meaningful shift: AI can change a person’s options for obtaining information, while the person still supplies the purpose, context, judgment and final decision.

The Scale of the Need

The World Health Organization reported in February 2026 that at least 2.2 billion people globally have a near or distance vision impairment. WHO also estimates that vision impairment is associated with approximately US$411 billion in annual global productivity losses.

Medical care, prevention, affordable eyeglasses, cataract surgery and vision rehabilitation remain essential. AI is not a substitute for any of them.

However, many people live with irreversible blindness or low vision, and even people who receive appropriate treatment may continue to encounter environments, products and digital services that were not designed accessibly. Assistive AI can help address part of this everyday information gap.

From Calling a Person to Asking a Visual Assistant

Be My Eyes originally became known for connecting blind and low-vision users with sighted volunteers through live video. The volunteer sees what the user chooses to show through the phone camera and describes it through a two-way audio conversation.

Be My Eyes now combines that human network with AI. According to live figures displayed on the organisation’s website on 20 September 2026, its community included:

More than 1.1 million blind and low-vision users

More than 11.1 million volunteers

Availability in 150+ countries

Support across 180+ languages

Be My AI adds a different form of assistance. The user takes a picture and receives a detailed description. Because the system is conversational, the person can ask it to look more closely at a particular object, explain part of a scene or answer a more specific question.

That difference matters. Traditional object recognition might identify “a refrigerator” or “several food items.” A conversational visual assistant can potentially identify visible ingredients and then respond to a follow-up question about what meal could be prepared with them.

The value is not only description. It is the ability to continue the inquiry.

What AI Can Help People Do

The most meaningful applications are often ordinary tasks that occur repeatedly throughout the day.

Visual AI may help a blind or low-vision user:

Read visible text on packaging or household products

Distinguish between similar objects

Understand the contents of a photograph

Describe clothing, colours or visual presentation

Interpret parts of a website or screen that are not properly accessible

Summarise a visually crowded shopping page

Examine an image and ask follow-up questions privately

Understand what is displayed on an appliance or control panel

These uses can reduce the number of routine occasions on which a person must wait for someone else to become available.

That does not make assistance from family members, friends or volunteers less valuable. It gives the user another option—and the freedom to decide which kind of help is appropriate for each situation.

The Human Capability Has Not Disappeared

It would be misleading to describe the AI as doing everything by itself.

The human user still contributes the most important elements of the process:

Deciding what information is needed

Positioning the camera and choosing what to share

Asking useful follow-up questions

Interpreting the response in context

Recognising when the answer seems incomplete or uncertain

Deciding when human verification is necessary

Taking responsibility for the final action

The AI contributes speed, availability, conversational visual interpretation and the ability to analyse a picture without requiring another person to join every routine interaction.

The result is best understood as human capability plus AI assistance, not human capability replaced by AI.

Independence Includes the Freedom to Ask Privately

There is another dimension that is easy for sighted people to overlook: privacy.

Asking another person to read a personal letter, describe a private photograph or identify an item can require revealing information that someone may prefer to keep to themselves. An AI assistant can sometimes reduce that social and privacy burden.

The September 2026 study described above shows why this matters. AI changes not only how information is accessed, but also who a person must ask, what must be disclosed and how much control the person retains over an everyday task.

AI and Human Volunteers Are Stronger Together

The Be My Eyes model is valuable because it does not force a false choice between AI and people.

Be My AI can respond immediately to many low-risk visual questions. If the answer is doubtful, incomplete or unsuitable, the user can reach a human volunteer.

This creates a practical sequence:

Use AI for speed, availability and routine interpretation.

Question the response conversationally.

Escalate to a person when judgment, verification or human understanding is needed.

That is a better model for many areas of AI adoption. Machines can handle frequent, repeatable or time-sensitive information tasks, while people remain available for ambiguity, accountability, empathy and higher-stakes judgment.

The future of useful AI may therefore be neither “AI instead of humans” nor “humans without AI.” It may be intelligently designed cooperation between the two.

The Limitations Are Not a Footnote

Visual AI can be wrong. It may overlook an object, misread text, misunderstand context or produce a confident description that does not match reality.

For a sighted user, some errors may be immediately visible. For a blind user, independently checking a visual answer may be much harder. That makes honest communication of uncertainty especially important.

Be My Eyes’ terms explicitly state that Be My AI can make mistakes and “hallucinate.” The service must not be relied upon:

To cross a street

As a replacement for a white cane, guide dog or other mobility aid

For emergencies

To identify medication or determine dosage

To check for ingredients that could cause an allergic reaction

As the sole source for any decision that could cause harm

These restrictions do not cancel the technology’s value. They define where the technology is currently appropriate.

Responsible use means matching the tool to the consequence of being wrong. Describing a non-critical photograph is different from reading a prescription. Choosing between two shirts is different from crossing a busy road.

The higher the potential harm, the stronger the need for human verification, specialised equipment or qualified professional assistance.

Privacy Must Be Understood, Not Assumed

Camera-based AI necessarily processes images of the user’s environment. Those images may contain faces, addresses, financial details, medicines, documents or other sensitive information.

Be My Eyes’ privacy policy, effective 1 September 2026, says that Be My AI photographs and queries are processed to provide the service, and that its AI provider is not permitted to use those submissions to train AI models. The policy also says Be My Eyes may use and analyse submissions and responses to improve its services other than by training AI models, enforce its terms, promote safety and develop products.

The same policy advises users not to expose identifying documents, financial information, home addresses, passwords, health information or other sensitive personal data.

This is a broader lesson for every AI user: convenience should never replace informed consent. Before sharing an image, document or conversation with any AI system, people should understand what is collected, where it is processed, how long it may be retained, who may receive it and what controls are available.

What This Means for Careers and Work

Accessibility is not only about completing household tasks. It also affects education, employment and professional participation.

Inaccessible screenshots, visual dashboards, scanned documents, presentation graphics and poorly labelled interfaces can create barriers even when a person is fully qualified to perform the underlying work.

Conversational visual AI may help a worker obtain an initial description of an image, interpret part of a screen or ask questions about visual material. Be My Eyes also describes desktop work tools that can analyse information from screens, clipboards and cameras for blind and low-vision workers.

But employers must not use AI as an excuse to stop building accessible systems. Websites, documents, software and workplace processes should still follow proper accessibility standards. AI assistance should expand choice and capability—not transfer the entire burden of inaccessible design onto the disabled employee.

A Lesson for Policymakers and Technology Leaders

The policy discussion around AI frequently focuses on productivity, competition, job displacement and national advantage. These questions matter, but they are incomplete.

Leaders should also ask:

Can AI give people more control over ordinary daily tasks?

Can it reduce barriers to education and employment?

Are disabled people involved in designing and testing the systems intended for them?

Does the system communicate uncertainty in an accessible way?

Is human assistance available when AI reaches its limits?

Are privacy protections understandable and meaningful?

Is access affordable across countries, languages and income levels?

Be My Eyes’ development process included feedback from blind and low-vision beta testers, and the organisation retained access to volunteers alongside AI. Those choices point toward a valuable principle: assistive technology should be built with the people who will use it, not merely for them.

Policymakers should support innovation while requiring meaningful safety, privacy, accessibility and accountability. Overly broad restrictions could delay tools that materially improve independence. Uncritical deployment could expose users to preventable harm. The better path is responsible access shaped by the lived experience of the affected community.

AI as Leverage for Human Independence

The deepest value of AI is not that it can produce more content or automate more office work. Its value becomes clearest when it gives someone greater agency over a part of life that previously required waiting, disclosing or depending on another person.

Visual AI does not eliminate blindness. It does not correct inaccessible design, replace medical care or make human support unnecessary. It can make selected visual information available in a new form—quickly, conversationally and, in many cases, independently.

That is human advancement in a meaningful sense.

The strongest future will not be one in which people are told to step aside for artificial intelligence. It will be one in which AI is designed to help more people participate, decide, learn, work and live with greater independence—while human judgment, dignity and responsibility remain central.

Sources

World Health Organization, “Blindness and vision impairment”, updated 10 February 2026.

Be My Eyes, homepage and current community statistics, accessed 20 September 2026.

Be My Eyes, “Introducing: Be My AI”, 7 August 2023.

OpenAI, “Be My Eyes: Transforming visual accessibility”.

Be My Eyes, Terms of Service, effective February/March 2026.

Be My Eyes, Privacy Policy, effective 1 September 2026.

Protik Dey, Mohd Saifuzzaman and Taslima Akter, “More Than Just Access: Generative AI as Communication Intermediary for Blind and Low-Vision Users”, research preprint, 14 September 2026.

Rahaf Alharbi, Pa Lor, Jaylin Herskovitz, Sarita Schoenebeck and Robin Brewer, “Misfitting With AI: How Blind People Verify and Contest AI Errors”, research preprint.

Accuracy and Editorial Note

This article was researched using publicly available information from the World Health Organization, Be My Eyes, OpenAI and published research sources.
From Indian roots to the financial centers of the United Kingdom, Singapore and the UAE, Vivek Doval’s professional journey demonstrates how qualifications, experience and global access can work together.

Success in global finance rarely comes from a single qualification, employer or country. It is usually built through a combination of specialised knowledge, experience inside major institutions, exposure to different markets, professional relationships and the ability to move wherever the strongest opportunities emerge.

The career of Vivek Doval offers an interesting example of this international path.

Vivek Doval is the younger son of Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Adviser. However, his own professional identity has developed in a very different field: investment management and global finance. Publicly available professional and institutional material associates him with the London School of Economics, Harvard Business School, the CFA and CAIA professional designations, Credit Suisse, British Airways Pension Investment Management, the GNY Asia Fund and senior investment roles in the United Arab Emirates.

His journey is also relevant to Career Partner India because it spans institutions and investment activity connected with the United Kingdom, Singapore and the UAE. During sworn testimony in a Delhi court in May 2019, Doval described himself as: “I am a UK citizen and I am a very proud overseas citizen of India.” His career therefore illustrates not only how a person of Indian origin can build an international career, but also how global mobility and access to different financial centers can expand the opportunities available along the way.

Building Professional Credibility Through Education and Qualifications

Fund management is a field in which judgement ultimately matters more than the number of certificates displayed after a person’s name. Nevertheless, rigorous education and respected professional qualifications can help establish the technical foundation and initial credibility required to enter the industry.

In July 2025, the Department of Management Studies at IIT Roorkee introduced Vivek Doval as an alumnus of the London School of Economics and Harvard Business School, as well as a CFA and CAIA charterholder. The same introduction described him as having more than two decades of international experience in finance and investments.

These qualifications represent different but complementary parts of an investment professional’s development:

University education can build a foundation in economics, finance, institutions and analytical reasoning.

The Chartered Financial Analyst programme is internationally recognised for its focus on investment analysis, portfolio management, ethics and professional standards.

The Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst qualification focuses on alternative assets and investment strategies beyond conventional listed equities and bonds.

Executive education and exposure to leading business schools can broaden a professional’s understanding of organisations, leadership and global decision-making.

Qualifications do not guarantee investment success. Markets repeatedly challenge even the most educated professionals. Their value lies in developing the language, analytical discipline and ethical framework with which increasingly complex decisions can be approached.

Learning Inside Major Financial Institutions

Public professional material has associated Doval’s earlier career with Credit Suisse and British Airways Pension Investment Management.

Experience inside such institutions can be an important form of professional apprenticeship. A large bank exposes a finance professional to formal research processes, sophisticated clients, risk controls and markets operating across jurisdictions. A major pension investment organisation introduces a different responsibility: managing capital with long-term obligations to thousands of members and beneficiaries.

This distinction matters. Managing institutional money is not simply about identifying an asset that might rise in value. It requires an understanding of portfolio construction, liquidity, risk, governance, accountability and the relationship between present decisions and future liabilities.

For students and young professionals, the broader lesson is that early institutional experience can create capabilities that are difficult to acquire through theory alone. It teaches how decisions are documented, questioned, approved and monitored when real capital and real responsibilities are involved.

Moving From Institutions to Fund Management

Doval later moved from established institutions towards entrepreneurial fund management.

Contemporary business reporting from 2016 described GNY Asia Fund as a Singapore-based investment initiative designed to take both long and short positions in Asian equities. IIT Roorkee’s 2025 introduction described Vivek Doval as a co-founder and chief investment officer of GNY Asia Fund.

The geographical structure of an international fund can involve several jurisdictions. Its investment professionals, advisers and service providers may operate in different financial centers, while the portfolio itself may invest across a much wider region.

Moving from employment within a large institution to helping lead a fund represents a significant professional transition. An institutional employee works within an established system. A fund leader must help construct the system: defining an investment philosophy, developing research and risk processes, communicating with investors, coordinating service providers and remaining accountable for performance.

The transition requires more than market knowledge. It demands leadership, patience, communication, governance and the ability to make decisions under uncertainty.

Why British Citizenship Is Professionally Relevant

OpIndia’s account of Doval’s sworn testimony provides direct, attributed support for his UK citizenship. Alongside knowledge and experience, this legal access to an important financial center can materially influence a professional’s career. According to the UK government, every British citizen automatically has the right of abode in the United Kingdom and can live and work there without immigration restrictions.

For Doval—or any international finance professional with that status—this freedom can be extremely valuable.

It can provide:

unrestricted access to employment opportunities in the United Kingdom;

the ability to change employers without making immigration status dependent on a new sponsor;

freedom to establish or participate in businesses without relying on a work visa;

long-term residential stability while professional relationships and credibility are built;

proximity to London’s banks, asset managers, pension funds, advisers and international investors; and

a more secure base for a career involving frequent cross-border travel and business activity.

The professional logic is easy to understand. A highly qualified finance professional with unrestricted access to one of the world’s leading financial centers operates within a wider opportunity set than an otherwise comparable professional whose ability to remain employed there depends on continuing visa sponsorship.

It would nevertheless be speculation to say why Doval became a UK citizen. The public sources reviewed for this article do not establish his personal motivation or the date on which he acquired citizenship. Nor do they prove that citizenship caused his professional success. What can responsibly be said is that British citizenship provides substantial practical advantages for building a career in the United Kingdom, and that Doval’s qualifications, institutional experience and investment judgement remained essential to making use of those advantages.

Legal access is also country-specific. A right to work in one country does not automatically provide the same right elsewhere. Professional competence, employer requirements and local immigration systems continue to matter whenever a career crosses borders.

That distinction is valuable for young readers: privilege and achievement can coexist. Recognising an enabling advantage does not erase the knowledge and work required to use it effectively.

Singapore: A Strategic Asian Financial Center

Singapore represented a logical location for an investment professional focused on Asian markets. It combines a stable regulatory environment with access to investors, financial institutions and businesses across Southeast Asia and the wider Asia-Pacific region.

For a fund investing in Asian equities, operating from Singapore can offer more than geographical convenience. It places an investment team closer to regional information flows, corporate activity, market participants and the economic changes shaping Asia.

It can also expand professional perspective. Experience connected with London-based institutions and a Singapore-based fund brings exposure to two distinct but interconnected financial ecosystems: one rooted in a long-established European and global capital market, and another positioned at the center of Asia’s economic growth.

This is where the value of being global becomes deeper than simply collecting countries on a résumé. Each market teaches a professional to examine risk, regulation, business culture and investor behaviour through a different lens.

A More Recent Chapter in the UAE

Doval’s more recent publicly visible professional material places him in the United Arab Emirates.

IIT Roorkee’s 2025 introduction identified him as a managing director associated with RG Group LLC and First Abu Dhabi Bank. More recent material shared by Torch Investment Lab in September 2026 describes him as Managing Director, Royal Group, UAE.

The UAE has become an increasingly important bridge connecting capital and opportunities across Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. For an investment professional with experience in London-linked institutions and Asian fund management, the country represents another strategic vantage point from which to understand global capital flows.

Rather than presenting Doval only as someone who once ran a hedge fund, it is more accurate to see his career as an evolving journey across institutional investing, fund management and senior investment leadership in several major financial centers.

Remaining Connected to India

An international career does not necessarily weaken a professional’s connection with India. In Doval’s case, recent public discussions show continuing engagement with India’s economic and investment potential.

In conversations published by Torch Investment Lab, he has discussed the breadth and depth of India’s listed equity market, the growing influence of systematic investment plans and the ways artificial intelligence may spread through the Indian economy.

One of his central observations is that investors should look beyond companies explicitly labelled as “AI companies.” Businesses across banking, technology services and other industries may benefit by using artificial intelligence to improve productivity, reduce costs or serve customers more effectively.

This reflects the perspective of a global investor looking at India both from within its economic story and from outside it. International experience can make it easier to compare India with other markets, understand how global capital evaluates the country and identify the areas in which India possesses unusual scale or depth.

This is one of the most meaningful contributions that globally experienced professionals of Indian origin can make. They can connect Indian opportunities with international capital, standards, networks and ideas while carrying an understanding of India into decision-making rooms elsewhere in the world.

What Aspiring Finance Professionals Can Learn

Vivek Doval’s journey offers several career lessons without suggesting that every student must reproduce the same path.

1. Build depth before seeking visibility

Finance rewards analytical discipline. Economics, accounting, valuation, statistics, portfolio construction and risk management create a stronger foundation than commentary without technical depth.

2. Use qualifications as foundations, not decorations

Credentials such as the CFA or CAIA can open doors and impose a disciplined learning structure. Their real value appears when knowledge is applied to uncertain decisions involving actual capital.

3. Learn how institutions operate

Experience within established financial organisations can teach standards of research, governance and accountability that later become invaluable in leadership or entrepreneurship.

4. Understand that geography affects opportunity

London, Singapore and the UAE offer different combinations of capital, talent, regulation and regional access. A willingness to move can expose a professional to opportunities that may not exist in one location alone.

5. Treat immigration status as part of career planning

Students frequently plan qualifications and job applications while treating visas, residency and citizenship as secondary administrative matters. In reality, legal access to a labour market can determine which opportunities are realistically available and how much professional freedom a person possesses.

No citizenship guarantees success. However, the right to live and work in an important market can provide continuity, reduce dependence on individual employers and make long-term career-building easier.

6. Preserve connections with India while becoming global

Going abroad need not mean moving away from India professionally. International expertise can eventually be directed towards Indian companies, markets, entrepreneurs and investors. A global career can expand the ways in which a person participates in India’s growth.

Talent Matters, but Access Matters Too

Career stories are often simplified into inspirational formulas: study hard, work hard and success will follow. Effort and ability matter enormously, but they do not operate in a vacuum.

A more realistic career equation includes:

*Knowledge + experience + judgement + networks + geography + legal access + opportunity*

Vivek Doval’s career brings many of these elements together. His academic and professional credentials helped establish technical credibility. Major institutions offered experience. Fund management required entrepreneurial responsibility. His work connected with the United Kingdom, Singapore and the UAE provided exposure to different financial ecosystems.

None of these elements should be viewed in isolation. Citizenship without competence does not create an accomplished investment professional. At the same time, competence can travel further when legal and geographical barriers are lower.

That is the larger lesson for Career Partner India’s readers. Becoming global is not about rejecting one’s origins. It is about expanding the range of places, institutions and ideas through which one can learn, contribute and lead.

Vivek Doval’s journey demonstrates how a professional of Indian origin can build a career across countries while continuing to engage with India’s economic future. It is a story not merely of working abroad, but of developing the ability to understand and connect multiple financial worlds.

A Personal Postscript: When Ideas Echo Back

Just a few hours after publishing this article—centred on global education, international experience and professional opportunities in the United Kingdom—I watched an episode of Numb3rs in which Charlie Eppes receives an invitation to teach at the University of Cambridge for a term. Amita responds with delight: “We’re going to England!”

The timing was remarkable. An idea that had occupied my thoughts while developing this article suddenly appeared again through an entirely different medium, almost like an unexpected echo of its central message: pursue the finest education and experience available to you, even when the opportunity takes you across borders.

Similar and sometimes even more remarkable coincidences have occurred in my life for many years, including through several amazing television shows. At unexpectedly relevant moments, a scene, conversation or storyline has reflected an idea, question or project that had recently been occupying my mind.

I do not consider such moments proof that one event caused the other. Their value lies in the meaning they can create. They encourage us to remain attentive, recognise connections and reflect on ideas that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

This particular scene felt like a wonderfully timed reminder of the article’s larger message: becoming global does not require us to leave our roots behind. It can mean expanding our knowledge, experience and perspective—and then carrying everything we learn into the lives and places to which we remain connected.

<img decoding="async" class="alignnone wp-image-423 size-full" src="https://www.careerpartner.in/wp-content/uploads/2026/09/Screenshot-from-Numb3rs-Season-6-Episode-15-Growin-Up-included-in-connection-with-the-personal-commentary-above.-All-rights-belong-to-their-respective-owners.jpeg" alt="Screenshot from Numb3rs, Season 6, Episode 15, “Growin’ Up,” included in connection with the personal commentary above.
Global Indians, home-grown creators, entrepreneurs and public institutions are bringing frontier AI knowledge and opportunities closer to millions of people.

A few days after OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra, my maternal uncle—who lives in the United States—shared a video about it in our family WhatsApp group.

The video, created by a young Indian educator, discussed how rapidly artificial intelligence is transforming work and what people can do to remain relevant. My uncle added that AI is already among us and that anyone who wants to participate in the workforce of the future must understand how jobs and work are changing.

That small family exchange made me think.

One of the world’s newest AI developments had travelled from an American laboratory to an Indian creator, then through an Indian living in the United States, and finally into a family conversation in Bharat (India).

This is how knowledge now travels—not only through universities, companies and conferences, but also through creators, communities and family WhatsApp groups.

More importantly, the conversation reflects something much larger: ChatGPT is no longer a distant technology understood by only a small group of engineers. It is becoming a practical companion for millions of people across Bharat who want to learn, work, create, solve problems and move forward.

More Than 100 Million Weekly Users in India

In February 2026, OpenAI reported that India had more than 100 million weekly ChatGPT users, including students, teachers, developers and entrepreneurs.

That number is striking, but the real story is not merely how many people are using ChatGPT. It is what they can now attempt because such a tool is available to them.

A student who cannot afford several private tutors can ask for a difficult idea to be explained step by step.

A job seeker can improve a résumé, practise an interview and understand the skills required for a particular role.

A shopkeeper or small-business owner can prepare a product description, customer message, advertisement or business plan.

A programmer can examine an unfamiliar error, learn a new framework and turn an idea into a working prototype.

A professional who is hesitant about writing in English can organise thoughts, improve clarity and communicate with greater confidence.

A creator can move from a rough idea to a script, graphic concept, video plan or publishing calendar.

None of these abilities began with ChatGPT. The intelligence, ambition and lived experience belong to the person. What ChatGPT can provide is leverage: it can help someone learn faster, explore further and convert an intention into action with fewer barriers.

A Patient Learning Companion

Education may be one of ChatGPT’s most meaningful contributions to Bharat.

Students do not all begin from the same place. Some attend well-resourced institutions and have access to experienced teachers, mentors and coaching. Others may be studying in a small town, learning in a second or third language, sharing devices or trying to master a subject without personal guidance.

ChatGPT cannot remove every inequality, but it can place a remarkably patient learning companion in the hands of anyone with access to it.

A learner can ask the same question repeatedly without embarrassment. The explanation can be simplified, expanded, translated, illustrated through an analogy or converted into a quiz. Instead of merely receiving an answer, the student can ask ChatGPT to teach the underlying concept, test understanding and identify gaps in reasoning.

Indian college students have reported using ChatGPT to explain difficult concepts, build study plans, create practice quizzes, evaluate assignments, summarise notes and prepare presentations.

OpenAI has also announced education partnerships in India and plans involving approximately half a million ChatGPT licences and training opportunities for students and educators. These initiatives include teachers in government schools, technical institutes under AICTE and participating schools across the country.

The most valuable use of AI in education is not to avoid thinking. It is to make deeper thinking more accessible.

If students use ChatGPT merely to copy an assignment, they may submit more words while learning less. If they use it to challenge their assumptions, request examples, test their knowledge and receive constructive feedback, it can become a powerful intellectual gymnasium.

Giving Small Businesses Access to Bigger Capabilities

Bharat’s economy is powered not only by large corporations but also by countless entrepreneurs, professionals, family businesses, independent creators and small teams.

Many of them have excellent products, services and ideas but limited access to specialist support. A small enterprise may not have separate teams for research, marketing, content, design, data analysis, customer communication and technology.

ChatGPT can help narrow that capability gap.

It can assist a founder in comparing business ideas, studying customer needs, organising operations or preparing the first version of a proposal.

It can help a local business write clearer website content, reply professionally to an international enquiry or translate information for a different audience.

It can help a team examine a spreadsheet, structure a campaign or document a process that previously existed only in someone’s memory.

This does not mean that one AI tool magically turns every business into a success. Markets still have to be understood. Customers still have to be served. Products must still be good, promises must be fulfilled and decisions must remain accountable to people.

But when a small team can perform some tasks that once required a much larger team, more Indians can experiment, compete and grow.

Confidence Can Be as Important as Productivity

One of ChatGPT’s quieter contributions is confidence.

Many capable people know what they want to say but are unsure how to present it. Some worry about grammar. Some have never written a formal proposal, professional email or public article. Others possess deep expertise in their own field but find digital tools intimidating.

ChatGPT can help them begin.

It can turn scattered thoughts into a structure, explain unfamiliar terminology and provide a first draft that the user can question and improve. It can converse without making someone feel judged for asking a basic question.

This matters enormously in a country with hundreds of languages and wide differences in educational and professional exposure. As support for Indian languages improves, more people can interact with advanced technology through the language in which they think most naturally.

The result is not only greater efficiency. It is a greater willingness to participate.

Someone who previously thought, “I do not know how to do this,” may now think, “Let me understand it and try.”

That change in mindset can open doors.

From Fear of AI to the Ability to Work With AI

Every major technological transition creates anxiety, and the concern surrounding jobs is legitimate.

AI will change tasks. Some kinds of work will shrink, others will be redesigned, and entirely new roles will emerge. Simply telling people not to worry would be neither honest nor helpful.

The better response is preparation.

People who learn to work effectively with AI may be able to research faster, communicate better, analyse more information and take on responsibilities that were previously beyond their time or resources.

A designer can explore more concepts.

A teacher can prepare more personalised material.

A marketer can study more customer perspectives.

A developer can prototype faster.

A manager can compare alternatives before making a decision.

The winning skill will not be typing a clever prompt once. It will be combining domain knowledge, curiosity, critical thinking and ethical judgment with AI’s speed and breadth.

ChatGPT can produce a confident answer that is incomplete or wrong. It does not personally bear the consequences of a business, medical, legal or financial decision. People must verify important facts, protect sensitive information, consult qualified professionals where necessary and remain responsible for the final outcome.

The future therefore belongs neither to humans working exactly as before nor to AI operating without human direction. It belongs to people who learn how to collaborate intelligently with AI while retaining judgment, empathy, accountability and purpose.

Growth Beyond the Workplace

Not all progress appears in a salary slip or company report.

People use ChatGPT to plan their day, understand an unfamiliar process, prepare questions for a doctor, explore a new subject, organise family travel, improve communication or think through a difficult decision.

It can help an elderly person understand unfamiliar digital language or help a parent create a learning activity for a child.

A large-scale study of consumer ChatGPT usage found that practical guidance, information-seeking and writing together accounted for around three-quarters of conversations. The study estimated that approximately 30% of consumer usage was work-related and 70% took place outside work—showing how AI can create value in both professional and everyday life.

This everyday assistance is important in Bharat, where access to specialised guidance can vary greatly by location, income, language and social network.

AI does not replace family, community or human expertise. But it can give a person a useful starting point at the exact moment help is needed.

Bharat Must Progress From Using AI to Building With AI

Widespread ChatGPT adoption is encouraging, but becoming a global AI leader will require more than becoming one of the world’s largest user bases.

Bharat must also build.

We need researchers advancing the science, engineers creating reliable systems, educators teaching responsible use, entrepreneurs solving Indian problems and institutions expanding access to computing and high-quality data.

We need AI that understands India’s languages, cultural contexts and development priorities. We need safeguards that protect privacy, security and human dignity.

India is already investing in shared computing infrastructure, indigenous foundation models, datasets, skills and responsible-AI initiatives through the IndiaAI Mission.

These efforts can help ensure that Indians are not merely consumers at the edge of someone else’s technological ecosystem, but creators shaping what AI becomes.

ChatGPT can play an important role in that journey. It lowers the distance between curiosity and capability. It allows more people to learn what was once difficult to access, attempt what once appeared too complicated and bring their own ideas into the digital world.

From a Family Message to a National Possibility

The video my uncle shared was about preparing for a changing world of work. Yet the way it reached me carried another message.

Indians across the world are watching, learning and sharing.

Indian creators are translating complex technological developments into accessible conversations.

Students are discovering new ways to learn.

Professionals are strengthening their abilities.

Entrepreneurs are gaining access to capabilities that once belonged mainly to large organisations.

Public institutions and private companies are building infrastructure for the next stage.

From Silicon Valley to a family WhatsApp group, AI knowledge is moving quickly—and Bharat is not standing still.

The most hopeful possibility is not that ChatGPT will do everything for us. It is that millions of people will use it to do more for themselves, their families, their organisations and their country.

ChatGPT has already placed a powerful new instrument in millions of Indian hands.

What Bharat learns, creates and accomplishes with it will be the far more important story.

Sources

Introducing OpenAI for India — OpenAI

Introducing the OpenAI Learning Accelerator in India — OpenAI

Top Chats From College Students in India — ChatGPT for Education

How People Are Using ChatGPT — OpenAI

IndiaAI Mission Initiatives — Press Information Bureau, Government of India

Accuracy and Editorial Note

Career Partner India makes every reasonable effort to research and verify the information presented in our articles using official, reputable and publicly available sources.

One of our aims is to help readers understand how studying and/or working in developed countries can provide valuable knowledge, international exposure, professional experience and opportunities that may contribute to greater career success and meaningful contributions to India.

Despite our sincere efforts, an article may occasionally contain an unintended error or outdated information.
Mr. Sundar Pichai is one of the world’s most prominent technology leaders. From growing up and studying engineering in India to pursuing higher education in the United States and eventually becoming the Chief Executive Officer of both Google and its parent company, Alphabet, his journey is an inspiring example of how education, international experience and long-term professional growth can lead to global impact.

Growing Up in Chennai

Mr. Pichai grew up in Chennai in a family that valued education and knowledge. He has recalled that new technologies arrived slowly during his childhood, but each one made a meaningful difference to everyday life.

These early experiences helped shape his interest in technology and its ability to expand access to information, create opportunities and improve people’s lives.

Studying Engineering at IIT Kharagpur

Mr. Pichai studied metallurgical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, graduating with a Bachelor of Technology degree in 1993.

He received the Institute Silver Medal, reflecting his strong academic performance. His engineering education gave him a rigorous technical foundation and prepared him to explore advanced fields of materials science and computing.

Pursuing Higher Education in the United States

After completing his undergraduate education in India, Mr. Pichai moved to the United States for further study.

He earned a Master of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University in 1995. Stanford, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, offered him exposure to an important international centre of technology, research and entrepreneurship.

He later completed a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 2002. At Wharton, he was named both a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar.

The combination of engineering, materials science and management education gave him an unusually broad understanding of technology, products, organizations and business strategy.

Building Professional Experience Before Google

Before joining Google, Mr. Pichai held positions at Applied Materials and McKinsey & Company.

His work at Applied Materials gave him experience in the technology and semiconductor industry, while his time at McKinsey provided exposure to management consulting and business problem-solving.

These different professional environments helped him develop the technical, commercial and strategic perspectives that would later become important in his leadership career.

Joining Google and Helping Develop Major Products

Mr. Pichai joined Google in 2004. One of his early responsibilities was overseeing Google Toolbar, which helped people access Google’s search services through their web browsers.

He subsequently helped lead the development of Google Chrome. Launched in 2008, Chrome grew to become one of the world’s most widely used internet browsers and supported the development of related products such as ChromeOS and Chromebooks.

As his responsibilities expanded, Mr. Pichai led major product areas that included Google Chrome and Apps such as Gmail, Docs and Drive. In 2013, he also assumed responsibility for Android, the mobile operating system used by device manufacturers and people around the world.

By 2014, he was overseeing product, engineering and research efforts across many of Google’s most important products and platforms, including Search, Maps, Android, Chrome, Google Play and cloud-based services.

Becoming CEO of Google and Alphabet

In August 2015, when Google’s founders announced the creation of Alphabet as a new parent company, Mr. Pichai was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Google.

The appointment followed more than a decade of steadily increasing responsibility. Rather than entering the company directly as its leader, he progressed through product and management roles while helping teams develop services used by people across the world.

He joined Alphabet’s Board of Directors in 2017. In December 2019, Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin announced that Mr. Pichai would also become Chief Executive Officer of Alphabet, making him responsible for leading Google and overseeing Alphabet’s broader portfolio of companies and long-term technology investments.

He continues to serve as the CEO of Google and Alphabet and as a member of Alphabet’s Board of Directors.

Leading Through a New Era of Artificial Intelligence

Under Mr. Pichai’s leadership, Google has increasingly focused on artificial intelligence and on developing products and services that apply advances in AI to everyday needs.

Leading a global technology organization during a period of rapid change requires decisions that may influence how billions of people search for information, communicate, learn, work and use digital services.

Mr. Pichai has frequently emphasised a long-term approach to technology and product development. In an interview published by Wharton, he explained that doing things well can be more important than doing them quickly, particularly when products are being developed at a very large scale.

His journey shows that leadership in technology is not based only on technical knowledge. It also requires collaboration, patience, the ability to listen to different perspectives and a willingness to keep learning as technologies and societies evolve.

Supporting India’s Digital Development

Although his education and career have taken him to the United States and to the leadership of a global company, Mr. Pichai has continued to speak about the importance of India in his life and outlook.

In 2020, he announced the Google for India Digitization Fund, through which Google planned to invest ₹75,000 crore—approximately US$10 billion at the time—over five to seven years.

The initiative was designed to support affordable access to information in Indian languages, develop products relevant to India’s needs, help businesses with digital transformation and use technology and AI in areas such as health, education and agriculture.

Mr. Pichai has also highlighted how solutions developed for India can benefit people internationally. Google’s Read Along learning application, for example, was created with Indian users in mind before being made available to children in many countries. Google’s flood-forecasting work in India similarly contributed to technology intended to help communities facing flood risks in other parts of the world.

This reflects an important feature of India’s growing role in technology: the country is not only adopting global innovation but also helping create ideas and solutions that can be useful worldwide.

Recognition with the Padma Bhushan

The Government of India named Mr. Pichai a recipient of the Padma Bhushan for 2022 in the field of Trade and Industry.

When he received the award in San Francisco, he described it as especially meaningful to be honoured by the country that shaped him. He wrote, “India is a part of me. I carry it with me wherever I go.”

The recognition reflects both his international professional achievements and his continuing connection with India.

An Inspiring Journey for Students and Professionals

Sundar Pichai’s journey—from Chennai and IIT Kharagpur to Stanford, Wharton, Silicon Valley and the leadership of Google and Alphabet—demonstrates how learning can continue across subjects, institutions, countries and stages of a career.

His path was built over many years through education, professional experience, product development, collaboration and progressively greater responsibility.

For students and young professionals, his journey carries an important message: an educational foundation in India can be strengthened through international study and work experience, while a global career can still maintain a meaningful connection with India.

It also shows that some of the most influential careers are built not through one sudden achievement, but through sustained learning, thoughtful work and the ability to help teams create solutions that serve people on a very large scale.

Official Sources

Sundar Pichai – Google Blog

Sundar Pichai Will Be Stanford’s 2026 Commencement Speaker – Stanford University

Metallurgical and Materials Engineering – IIT Kharagpur

Sundar Pichai WG02 Wants to Change Your Life – Wharton Magazine, University of Pennsylvania

Sundar Pichai – CapitalG, Alphabet

G Is for Google – Google Blog

A Letter from Larry and Sergey – Google Blog

Investing in India’s Digital Future – Google Blog

Padma Awards 2022 – Government of India

Thoughts on India and Technology After Receiving the Padma Bhushan – Google Blog
