Mr. Sundar Pichai is one of the world’s most prominent technology leaders. Growing Up in Chennai
Mr. Pichai grew up in Chennai in a family that valued education and knowledge. He has recalled that new technologies arrived slowly during his childhood, but each one made a meaningful difference to everyday life.

Studying Engineering at IIT Kharagpur
Mr. Pichai studied metallurgical engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, graduating with a Bachelor of Technology degree in 1993.
He received the Institute Silver Medal, reflecting his strong academic performance. His engineering education gave him a rigorous technical foundation and prepared him to explore advanced fields of materials science and computing.
Pursuing Higher Education in the United States
After completing his undergraduate education in India, Mr. Pichai moved to the United States for further study.
He earned a Master of Science degree in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University in 1995. Stanford, located in the heart of Silicon Valley, offered him exposure to an important international centre of technology, research and entrepreneurship.
He later completed a Master of Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 2002. At Wharton, he was named both a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar.
The combination of engineering, materials science and management education gave him an unusually broad understanding of technology, products, organizations and business strategy.
Building Professional Experience Before Google
Before joining Google, Mr. Pichai held positions at Applied Materials and McKinsey & Company.
His work at Applied Materials gave him experience in the technology and semiconductor industry, while his time at McKinsey provided exposure to management consulting and business problem-solving.
These different professional environments helped him develop the technical, commercial and strategic perspectives that would later become important in his leadership career.
Joining Google and Helping Develop Major Products
Mr. Pichai joined Google in 2004. One of his early responsibilities was overseeing Google Toolbar, which helped people access Google’s search services through their web browsers.
He subsequently helped lead the development of Google Chrome. Launched in 2008, Chrome grew to become one of the world’s most widely used internet browsers and supported the development of related products such as ChromeOS and Chromebooks.
As his responsibilities expanded, Mr. Pichai led major product areas that included Google Chrome and Apps such as Gmail, Docs and Drive. In 2013, he also assumed responsibility for Android, the mobile operating system used by device manufacturers and people around the world.
By 2014, he was overseeing product, engineering and research efforts across many of Google’s most important products and platforms, including Search, Maps, Android, Chrome, Google Play and cloud-based services.
Becoming CEO of Google and Alphabet
In August 2015, when Google’s founders announced the creation of Alphabet as a new parent company, Mr. Pichai was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Google.
The appointment followed more than a decade of steadily increasing responsibility. Rather than entering the company directly as its leader, he progressed through product and management roles while helping teams develop services used by people across the world.
He joined Alphabet’s Board of Directors in 2017. In December 2019, Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin announced that Mr. Pichai would also become Chief Executive Officer of Alphabet, making him responsible for leading Google and overseeing Alphabet’s broader portfolio of companies and long-term technology investments.
He continues to serve as the CEO of Google and Alphabet and as a member of Alphabet’s Board of Directors.
Leading Through a New Era of Artificial Intelligence
Under Mr. Pichai’s leadership, Google has increasingly focused on artificial intelligence and on developing products and services that apply advances in AI to everyday needs.
Leading a global technology organization during a period of rapid change requires decisions that may influence how billions of people search for information, communicate, learn, work and use digital services.
Mr. Pichai has frequently emphasised a long-term approach to technology and product development. In an interview published by Wharton, he explained that doing things well can be more important than doing them quickly, particularly when products are being developed at a very large scale.

Supporting India’s Digital Development

In 2020, he announced the Google for India Digitization Fund, through which Google planned to invest ₹75,000 crore—approximately US$10 billion at the time—over five to seven years.
The initiative was designed to support affordable access to information in Indian languages, develop products relevant to India’s needs, help businesses with digital transformation and use technology and AI in areas such as health, education and agriculture.
Mr. Pichai has also highlighted how solutions developed for India can benefit people internationally. Google’s Read Along learning application, for example, was created with Indian users in mind before being made available to children in many countries. Google’s flood-forecasting work in India similarly contributed to technology intended to help communities facing flood risks in other parts of the world.
This reflects an important feature of India’s growing role in technology: the country is not only adopting global innovation but also helping create ideas and solutions that can be useful worldwide.
Recognition with the Padma Bhushan
The Government of India named Mr. Pichai a recipient of the Padma Bhushan for 2022 in the field of Trade and Industry.
When he received the award in San Francisco, he described it as especially meaningful to be honoured by the country that shaped him. He wrote, “India is a part of me. I carry it with me wherever I go.”
The recognition reflects both his international professional achievements and his continuing connection with India.
